MLB unveils 2017 Uniforms for Special Events

Press Release | April 11th, 2017

Major League Baseball today unveiled the full lineup of special event uniforms that will be worn during spring and summer holiday weekends as well as special MLB events during the 2017 Championship Season. For the first time, MLB Clubs will spend the entirety of each holiday weekend – Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day and Independence Day – in newly designed uniforms. Additionally, players participating in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and Gatorade All-Star Workout Day, which includes the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, will wear new Miami Marlins-inspired uniforms. The All-Star Game presented by Mastercard will also feature new cap and sock designs.

MLB worked closely with its Authentic Collection partners Majestic, New Era and Stance to create cohesive looks for each event. This is the first year players have the option to wear uniquely designed athletic socks for the special event holiday games. After joining the league’s roster of on-field licensees in 2016, Stance made its special event debut during the 2016 All-Star festivities. MLB also worked in concert with Rawlings, the Official Baseball of MLB, to create new stitching color patterns on special event balls.

MLB will again donate its licensed uniform royalties that are connected to charitable initiatives. Proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen (Mother’s Day), Prostate Cancer Foundation (Father’s Day), Stand Up To Cancer (Mother’s Day and Father’s Day), and MLB Charities (Memorial Day and Independence Day) – used to support programs for military veterans and their families.
MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND: SATURDAY, MAY 13 – SUNDAY, MAY 14

After their debut last season, Mother’s Day uniforms will again incorporate pink into Clubs’ regular logos, with all caps highlighted by a graphite crown and pink visor. Each Club may also choose from two different pairs of pink-infused socks. Players have swung pink bats, worn pink ribbon decals and sported pink wristbands on Mother’s Day to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer since 2006.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: SATURDAY, MAY 27 – MONDAY, MAY 29

New Era has created a special cap for teams to wear during Memorial Day games for the ninth consecutive year, while Majestic has designed a special matching jersey for the fifth straight year. The right side of the caps feature five stars to represent the five branches of the military, while the stars are also stitched on the jerseys’ right sleeves. This year’s uniforms, including the specialty socks, also utilize a new ripstop woodland camouflage design. MLB’s annual league-wide observance of Memorial Day will honor those who lost their lives while serving their country. MLB again plans to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance through which ballparks on Memorial Day will conduct moments of silence and special pregame ceremonies.

FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND: SATURDAY, JUNE 17 – SUNDAY, JUNE 18

Similar to the Mother’s Day theme, for the second consecutive year Father’s Day uniforms will feature light blue incorporated in the Clubs’ logos. These caps will have a blue shadow tech heather crown and graphite visor. Also like Mother’s Day, each Club may choose from two different pairs of light blue-infused socks. Players have worn blue ribbons and sported blue wristbands throughout the years on Father’s Day since MLB first partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation in 1996.

INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND: SATURDAY, JULY 1 – TUESDAY, JULY 4

For the 10th summer in a row, U.S.-based MLB clubs will sport stars and stripes-decorated caps with red, white and blue LiquidChrome official team logos to celebrate Independence Day. For the third straight year, Clubs will also wear a matching jersey and for the first time, player socks can match the rest of the uniform with a stars & stripes pattern. The Toronto Blue Jays will sport new red alternate jerseys with new red Maple Leaf caps on Canada Day, July 1.

SIRIUSXM ALL-STAR FUTURES GAME/GATORADE ALL-STAR WORKOUT DAY/T-MOBILE HOME RUN DERBY: SUNDAY, JULY 9 & MONDAY, JULY 10

The jerseys, caps and socks that top prospects wear for the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and that MLB All-Stars wear on Gatorade All-Star Workout Day, which includes the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, will borrow their design from the All-Star host club, the Miami Marlins. American League jerseys are primarily blue with a black accent over the shoulders from sleeve to sleeve. National League jerseys follow the same pattern, but with an orange base. A bold star accented in the Marlins colors with a Marlin tale replaces a letter ‘A’ in the league names. The caps include a honeycomb open-hole black mesh crown with the team logos in orange, a LiquidChrome All-Star Game side patch and a colorful floral pattern on the undervisor. The socks from Stance also feature a colorful floral pattern with notes of green, blue, yellow, red and orange.

ALL-STAR GAME PRESENTED BY MASTERCARD: TUESDAY, JULY 11

For the fourth consecutive year, New Era, in conjunction with MLB, has created a new cap design theme, representing every Club, to be worn in the All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. This year’s caps feature a gold team logo with differing shadow tech heather-colored crowns and an All-Star Game LiquidChrome side patch. Returning from last year’s collection is a set of gold metal stars as the eyelets on the top of the caps’ crown. Jerseys worn during the All-Star Game will include a new patch on the left sleeve – a black and gold star with a number in the middle that correlates to each player’s total career All-Star appearances. A patch of the primary All-Star Game logo will adorn the right sleeve. The All-Star Game socks by Stance have a palm tree on each leg with blue and orange backgrounds.

2017 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS OPEN WITH FIVE-GAME SLATE
The 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs open tonight with a five-game slate:

* Art Ross Trophy winner Connor McDavid and the Oilers (47-26-9, 103 points), who qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2006, host one of last year’s Stanley Cup finalists when they welcome the Sharks (46-29-7, 99 points) to Rogers Place. This marks the second playoff meeting between these clubs (2006 CSF: EDM 4-2); Edmonton held a 3-1-1 edge in their regular-season series (SJS: 2-3-0).

* The Atlantic Division-winning Canadiens (47-26-9, 103 points) face the Rangers (48-28-6, 102 points) in an Original Six showdown at Bell Centre featuring two star goaltenders: Montreal’s Carey Price (37-20-5, 2.23 GAA, .923 SV%, 3 SO) and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist (31-20-4, 2.74 GAA, .910 SV%, 2 SO). This marks the 16th postseason meeting between these teams (NYR: 8, MTL: 7); the Canadiens swept their three-game, regular-season series (NYR: 0-2-1).

* The defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins (50-21-11, 111 points), led by reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sidney Crosby, host the Blue Jackets (50-24-8, 108 points), who set franchise records for wins and points this season, at PPG Paints Arena. This marks the second all-time playoff meeting between these clubs (2014 FR: PIT 4-2); each went 2-1-1 during their regular-season series.

* Atlantic Division rivals collide when the Senators (44-28-10, 98 points) play host to the Bruins (44-31-7, 95 points) at Canadian Tire Centre in their first playoff meeting. Ottawa is led by captain Erik Karlsson (17-54—71 in 2016-17), while Boston is powered by forward Brad Marchand (39-46—85). The Senators swept the regular-season series between these clubs for the first time in franchise history (4 GP).

* The Wild (49-25-8, 106 points), who set franchise records for wins and points in a season, face the Blues (46-29-7, 99 points) at Xcel Energy Center. This marks the second postseason meeting between these teams (2015 FR: MIN 4-2); the Blues held a 3-2-0 edge in their regular-season series (MIN: 2-2-1).

THE IMPORTANCE OF A FAST START
Per Elias, teams that win Game 1 in a best-of-seven Stanley Cup Playoffs series hold an all-time series record of 447-204 (68.7%).

COACHING CONNECTIONS
Many of the coaches behind the bench on Wednesday have a previous connection to their opponent:

* Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault guided the Canadiens from 1997-00 compiling a 109-118-39 record. The last time Vigneault faced current Montreal coach Claude Julien in the postseason, his Canucks lost in seven games to Julien’s Bruins in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.

* Oilers head coach Todd McLellan led the Sharks for seven seasons – including back-to-back trips to the Conference Finals in 2010 and 2011 – and holds franchise records for games coached (540) and wins (311).

* Blues head coach Mike Yeo served behind the Wild bench from 2011-16, compiling a 173-132-44 record in the regular season and twice leading Minnesota to playoff series victories.

* Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella and Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan have a deep history. Sullivan – who led Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup last year – served as an assistant on Tortorella’s staff on three occasions (TBL: 2007-08, NYR: 2009-13 and VAN: 2013-14).

MLS Player of the Week honors go to Real Salt Lake’s Albert Rusnak

NEW YORK (Tuesday, April 11, 2017) – Real Salt Lake midfielder Albert Rusnák was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the sixth week of the 2017 MLS season.

Rusnák helped RSL capture its first victory of the season when he recorded a goal and two assists in a 3-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday. The 22-year-old Designated Player now has one goal on the season, while his three assists this year rank tied for third league wide. With the victory, RSL improved to 1-3-2 and sits in eighth place in the Western Conference standings with five points.

The Slovakia National Team member opened his MLS account with a goal in the 54thminute to push Real Salt Lake ahead 1-0. In wintry conditions and battling snow on the field, Rusnák dribbled into the box and beat a defender with a fake attempt at goal before squeezing a shot just inside near post past goalkeeper David Ousted (Watch Goal).

Rusnák would then assist on Yura Movsisyan’s 74th minute goal with a tremendous long-range pass from midfield, setting Movsisyan up to extend RSL’s lead to 2-0 (Watch Assist). RSL would then take a 3-0 lead in the 78th minute when Rusnák sent a corner kick into the middle of the box where midfielder Luke Mulholland put the ball into the back of net (Watch Assist).

Real Salt Lake returns to action this Saturday, April 15 when it travels to take on Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (9 p.m. ET, MLS LIVE).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
