Crew SC’s Gyasi Zardes recent MLS Alcatel Player of the Week

PRESS RELEASE WRITTEN BY & COURTESY OF MLS COMMUNICATIONS

NEW YORK (Tuesday, May 15, 2018) – Columbus Crew SC forward Gyasi Zardes was voted the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 11th week of the 2018 MLS season.

Columbus defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Wednesday at MAPFRE Stadium behind a Zardes goal, with the 26-year-old scoring two more times in Saturday’s 3-0 home victory over the Chicago Fire. With the three scores this week, Zardes is now tied for the Golden Boot lead with eight goals scored in 12 matches played this season. Columbus sits in second place in the Eastern Conference with 21 points (6-3-3 overall record).

The U.S. Men’s National Team member would score the only goal in Crew SC’s victory over Philadelphia, finding the ball in front of goal off a defensive deflection to finish with a left-footed tap-in from close range for a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute (Watch Goal).

Zardes continued to show his scoring prowess three days later, giving Columbus a 2-0 advantage in the 50th minute with a left-footed touch from right in front of goal, set up by Niko Hansen’s sideline run (Watch Goal). Crew SC would take a 3-0 lead in the 70th minute when Ricardo Clark passed the ball into the box, with Mike Grella faking a shot to leave enough open space for Zardes to send a right-footed blast just inside the right post (Watch Goal ). The multi-goal performance was the second of the season and sixth in Zardes’ MLS career.

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men’s soccer in the United States and Canada.

MLS announces Crew SC’s Gyasi Zardes as Player of the Week

PRESS RELEASE WRITTEN BY & COURTESY OF COLUMBUS CREW SC COMMUNICATIONS

Gyasi Zardes

Zardes named MLS Player of the Week for Week 11 after scoring three goals in two matches and helping Crew SC earn consecutive wins

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew this past week announced that forward Gyasi Zardes was voted Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 11 of the 2018 MLS season. It is the first Player of the Week honor for Zardes, as well as the first such honor for the Black & Gold this season.

Zardes earned the award for Week 11, in which he played two matches in four days (as well as his third match in eight days overall) and scored three goals. Zardes scored the game-winning goal in Crew SC’s 1-0 home victory over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, May 9. Three days later, the 26-year-old forward registered a brace in a 3-0 win against the Chicago Fire at MAPFRE Stadium, including a 70th-minute strike which was nominated for MLSSoccer.com’s AT&T Goal of the Week. Zardes’ brace against Chicago marked the second time that the forward has scored two goals in the 2018 regular season, as he previously netted two strikes in a 3-2 home victory over the Montreal Impact on March 10.

Through 12 matches in the 2018 MLS regular season, Zardes has scored eight goals and is currently tied with Josef Martinez of Atlanta United FC for first place in the MLS Golden Boot race. Zardes’ eight tallies in regular-season action mark his second-highest goal output behind only the 16 goals he scored in 2014 with the LA Galaxy. Additionally, Zardes is the only player to have started every match for Crew SC and currently leads the team in minutes (1,058), goals (eight), shots (26) and shots on target (13). His two game-winning goals in regular-season action tie him with Federico Higuain for most on the team.

This is the 53rd time in MLS history that a Crew SC player has been named MLS Player of the Week. Zardes joins current teammate Federico Higuain (three times) in having earned the weekly honor while a member of Crew SC.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.

Crew SC posts fourth straight shutout in 1-0 win at New England; Team is 7-3-3 with 24 points

Former Dayton Flyers soccer standout Lalas Abubakar scores on acrobatic header for game-winner

Foxboro, Massachusetts – Columbus Crew SC extended its undefeated streak to six consecutive matches with a 1-0 road win over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. The contest remained a 0-0 affair until the 85th minute, when Lalas Abubakar headed in the game-winning goal off a corner kick from Federico Higuain.

The first half of the contest saw both teams combine for a total of 19 shots to no avail, as neither team was able to impose its will on the other in the opening 45 minutes. The clearest chance for the Black & Gold came in the ninth minute, when Federico Higuain fired a shot inside the box that went over the crossbar. At the other end, Zack Steffen was forced into making three saves, helping Crew SC reach halftime with the score tied at zero.

With the win, the Black & Gold are now undefeated in their last six regular-season matches, a streak that started with a 2-2 home draw against the Revs. Over that span, Crew SC have posted a record of 4-0-2, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 9-3.

The result also meant that the Black & Gold secured their fourth consecutive shutout. Crew SC have gone 405 consecutive minutes without giving up a goal, a streak that is just nine minutes shy of the club record of 414 minutes from the 2011 MLS regular season.

The win also gives Crew SC a record of 7-3-3 for 24 points and a tie for second place in the MLS’ Eastern Division with New York City FC.

Up next, the Black & Gold travel to take on Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday, May 27 at 6:00 p.m. ET in a nationally televised match.

Busy week continues for Crew SC as they host Philadelphia tonight at 7:30

GAME PREVIEW WRITTEN BY Megan Scribner; COURTESY COLUMBUS CREW SC COMMUNICATIONS

Columbus Crew SC plays their second game of the week on Wednesday, hosting the Philadelphia Union at MAPFRE Stadium. The two clubs’ second head-to-head match of the season is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The match kicks-off at 7:30 p.m. ET and is set to be televised regionally on MyTV Columbus, Spectrum Sports and BCSN2 with Neil Sika, Dwight Burgess and Alex Stec on the call. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. ET. Post-match coverage is set to follow exclusively on Spectrum Sports in Ohio. Wednesday’s match also airs locally on the radio on CD102.5 FM in English, featuring simulcast audio from the television broadcast. The club’s official website, ColumbusCrewSC.com, is set to stream the English-language radio broadcast online as well as host the Spanish-language audio broadcast with Juan Valladares behind the microphone.

Crew SC left Talen Energey Stadium with a point after a scoreless stalemate against the Union in Week 3 of the 2018 Major League Soccer regular-season. Federico Higuain set up the Black & Gold offense on three separate occasions, but the final goal was not there. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen recorded his second shutout of the season with three saves against the Union.

A 10-man Crew SC split points with Seattle last Saturday at CenturyLink Field. In the 15th minute, midfielder Pedro Santos was shown a straight red card following a video review on a tackle — causing him to miss Wednesday’s match. The 31st minute saw defender Alex Crognale make his first appearance since returning from being on-loan with Orange County SC. The Black & Gold defense allowed only one shot on goal throughout the game as Steffen recorded his third shutout of the season.

Philadelphia is coming off of a Friday night loss against Toronto FC. The Black & Gold are 11-8-2 against the Union in regular-season matches.
