Cavaliers being short-handed does not stop them in beating Atlanta, 123-107

If the Cavs would have lost to Atlanta last night, no one would have said anything because they knew that the new players that came in multiple trades on Thursday could not play until they pass physicals, Larry Nance, Jr., Jordan Clarkson from the Lakers; George Hill from the Kings and Rodney Hood from Utah.

Those players were in Atlanta and on the bench last night but not dressed.

The Cavs did win the game regardless with only seven regular players available, 123-107.

Those players were LeBron James, J.R. Smith, Kyle Korver, Jose Calderon, Cedi Osman, Jeff Green and Tristan Thompson.

Leading the way last night was Korver with a season-high 30 points on 7 of 13 from 3-point land. James had a triple-double with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 17 assists. The 65th time he has accomplished it in his career. Green contributed 24 and Osman, who has been pushing for playing time all season, had a career-high 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.

To fill out the bench, the team added from their D-League team at Canton, Ante Žižić, John Holland, London Perrantes.

The Cavaliers took control of the game early and never let up.

They outscored the Hawks 26-18 on fast breaks, 48-34 in the paint area and their three-man bench won 57-40.

Cleveland leads the Central Division with a record of 31-22 and has a 2-game lead over both Indiana and Milwaukee. They are third in the Eastern Conference standings behind Boston and Toronto.

According to several media reports today, the Cleveland Cavaliers have found a suitable replacement for Andrew Bogut.

The Cavs have signed Larry Sanders, a 28-year-old, 6’11, 235-pound center, who hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2014-15 season with the Milwaukee Bucks.

A former star at Virginia Commonwealth University, Sanders walked away from basketball during the 2014-15 season to address mental health issues which were found out to be anxiety, depression and mood disorders. At the time he walked away from the game, this was his statement: He said that the program led him to realize “what’s important, and where I would want to devote my time and energy” and that ultimately he realized that “for [basketball] to be consuming so much of my life and time right now … it’s not there for me. It’s not that worth it.” He did, however, claim to still love the game and that “if I get to a point where I feel I’m capable of playing basketball again, then I will.”

On January 26, 2017, Sanders announced his decision to return to basketball.

The new contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, marks the beginning of his comeback.

According to the news reports, the Cavs plans for Sanders at this time at not surprising. He will practice with the team during off-game days; then play with their NBA Development team, the Canton Charge for the rest of the regular season. By achieving that, the team has high hopes Sanders will be physically ready for the postseason stretch.

For his first two seasons for VCU, Sanders was the supporting star to guard Eric Maynor.  Sanders was brilliant as the second star,  utilizing his size and athleticism to disrupt teams defensively. As a sophomore, he helped the Rams into the 2009 NCAA Tournament,  but lost 65–64 to the UCLA Bruins in the first round of the tournament. Sanders went on to have a more prominent role in his junior season after Maynor was drafted into the NBA. As a junior Sanders averaged 14.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks, with 53% field-goal accuracy, all statistical team highs, on his way to earning the second of his consecutive Colonial Athletic AssociationDefensive Player of the Year awards in 2008–09 and 2009–10.

Larry Sanders announced in April 2010 after his junior year that he was leaving  VCU early to enter the National Basketball Association Draft.

His VCU honor roll:

  • First-team All-CAA (2010)
  • Second-team All-CAA (2009)
  • 2× CAA Defensive Player of the Year (2009, 2010)
  • 3× CAA All-Defensive Team (2008–2010)
  • CAA All-Freshman Team (2008)

Smith returns tonight but Cavs could lose services of injured Shumpert

The Cleveland Cavaliers are 1-1 in their NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals series against the Chicago Bulls.

They have so far survived a season-ending shoulder injury to Kevin Love and a two-game suspension to J.R. Smith.

Tonight, the Cavs get Smith back but there is another obstacle in their way.

Head coach David Blatt says that the team could be without the services of Iman Shumpert for the Game 3 matchup in Chicago.

Shumpert is recovering from a strained groin injury suffered in the second half of Game 2, a 106-91 blowout by the Cavs at home on Wednesday.

The 6’5, 220-pound, 24-year-old Shumpert, a sharpshooting guard, made four 3-point baskets and 15 points filling in for Smith. Shumpert also played well in Game 1, netting 22 points.
