Mason, the Calder Cup Trophy winner as the NHL’s rookie of the year in 2008-2009, slumped badly last season as Columbus shocked everybody by not returning to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The native of Oakville, Ontario, was selected by the Blue Jackets in the second round of the 2006 draft.

On Saturday, the team announced that Coach Hitchcock will be a special adviser, reporting to general manager Scott Howson and team president Mike Priest.

He will travel the continent evaluating the team’s junior and college prospects and serving as a scout. He will also advise the minor league staff in Springfield which replaced Syracuse as the Blue Jackets top farm team.

Hitchcock has two years remaining on his contract.

NHL approves bylaw change for breaking ties in standings

(megasportsnews.com)

The National Hockey League has approved a change in its bylaw that governs how the league breaks ties in the final standings at the end of the regular season.

Under the revised bylaw approved by the NHL Board of Governors on Tuesday, shootout wins will not be included in the tiebreaker for two teams which finish with the same amount of points. That tiebreaker will be limited to regulation and overtime wins.

The NHL’s general managers proposed the bylaw change during the meetings in March. The NHL Players Association representatives on the competition committee voted for the change last Saturday.
