LAST MATCH RECAP

CREW KNOCKS OFF FC CINCINNATI AT HOME
On Sunday night, the Black & Gold hosted its in-state rival, FC
Cincinnati at Lower.com Field. Early in the match, Lucas Zelarayan crossed a free kick into the box where Cucho Hernandez
was able to redirect the ball into the back of the net. The Crew
doubled the lead with a penalty kick in the 86th minute taken
by Zelarayan. Eloy Room and the defense posted their sixth
shutout of the season to help the Crew win 2-0.

CREW HOLDS LONGEST ACTIVE UNDEFEATED STREAK IN
MLS
Columbus Crew currently holds an undefeated streak of
eight matches, the longest active undefeated streak in MLS.
The streak dates back to a 2-1 road victory over Atlanta
United earlier this year (May 28). Over that stretch, the Crew
has earned at least a point in all five of its road matches
including at Real Salt Lake, a feat only two other team has
accomplished this season. The Crew has also outscored its
opponents 12-7 over that span, registering three shutouts.
This streak is the longest regular-season undefeated streak
for the Club since 2018, and the longest streak under Crew
Head Coach Caleb Porter.

HERNANDEZ: FIRST PLAYER IN MLS TO SCORE FIRST FOUR
GOALS IN UNDER 90 MINUTES
Forward Juan “Cucho” Hernandez has already made an
impact since joining the Columbus Crew. During Saturday’s
2-0 victory over FC Cincinnati, the forward scored the Crew’s
game-winning goal in the 16th minute of the contest – his
fourth goal in just 88 minutes of action. With the goal, Hernandez became the first player in League history to register
his first four goals in MLS regular-season action in under 90
minutes. Additionally, the Colombian forward reached both
the two goal and three goal milestones faster than any other
player in Black & Gold history.

HERNANDEZ: FIRST CREW PLAYER TO SCORE IN EACH OF
HIS FIRST THREE MLS REGULAR-SEASON MATCHES
Juan “Cucho” Hernandez has scored at least one goal in each
of his first three matches for the Crew – the first player in
Club history to do so. Hernandez made his debut against
Chicago Fire FC (July 9), scoring the game-winning goal in the
83rd minute after coming in as a substitute. The Colombian
forward again played a crucial role in the road match against
D.C. United (July 13), scoring his second and third goals of the
season in the 62nd and 81st minutes, helping the Crew secure
a point on the road. Hernandez then scored 16 minutes into
his home debut against in-state rival FC Cincinnati, tallying the
first of two goals for the Black & Gold.

ZELARAYAN PROVIDES GAME-WINNING ASSIST, SCORES
AGAINST FC CINCINNATI
Lucas Zelarayan provided both the game-winning assist and
a goal in the Crew’s 2-0 victory over FC Cincinnati on Sunday
night. Zelarayan connected with Juan “Cucho” Hernandez
through a free kick from outside the box in the 16th minute,
allowing Hernandez to score. Zelarayan doubled the Crew’s
lead in the 86th minute by converting a penalty kick. Through
16 games played in the 2022 MLS regular season, Zelarayan
has scored five goals and registered nine assists. Notably, the
playmaker has registered five assists and scored one goal in
his last three matches for the Crew.

HERNANDEZ AND ZELARAYAN NAMED TO TEAM OF THE
WEEK
Juan “Cucho” Hernandez and Lucas Zelarayan were both
named to the MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week for Week

  1. Hernandez supplied the game winning goal courtesy of
a header in the 16th minute, redirected Zelarayan’s free kick
into the back of the net. Hernandez has been named to the
Team of the Week every week he has been available for selection since making his debut for the Crew on July 9. In addition to his game-winning assist, Zelarayan doubled the home
team’s advantage by converting a penalty kick in the 86th minute.

HERNANDEZ AND ZELARAYAN: A BUDDING PARTNERSHIP
Since making his debut in the Crew’s 2-3 win over Chicago Fire
FC, forward Juan “Cucho” Hernandez has struck up a partnership with midfielder Lucas Zelarayan. Zelarayan has assisted
three of Hernandez’s four goals, including both goals in the
2-2 road draw against D.C. United (July 13) and the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory over FC Cincinnati this past Sunday.

COLUMBUS CREW: ROAD WARRIORS
The Columbus Crew have earned 15 points on the road this
season, including going unbeaten in the last five road matches.
The Crew have managed to earn at least a point in several
difficult road environments including Real Salt Lake (June
25), Atlanta United (May 28) and New York Red Bulls (May 20).
The team has lost just two of its 10 matches away from home,
boasting a record of 3-2-5 on the road.

BLACK & GOLD QUOTES

ON WHETHER TEAMS WILL BEGIN TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO
DEFEND AGAINST JUAN “CUCHO” HERNANDEZ
“When you look at the goals he has scored, they’re all different
types of goals. That’s a good thing, that it’s not the same type of
goal. There are strikers in this league where you know how they
score and there are strikers in this league that you know can
score in many different ways. That makes him harder to gameplan for.”

  • CALEB PORTER
ON LUIS DIAZ’S ABILITIES AS A PLAYER
“He has world-class pace, everybody knows that. I think everybody fears that. When you play him, you’re always going to have
to be aware of his pace, because there’s no one that is going to
beat him in a foot race.”
