St. Louis Cardinals announce roster moves

ST. LOUIS, MO., May 23, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today a series of roster moves prior to tonight’s game with Toronto.

The team has placed left-handed pitcher Steven Matz (left shoulder impingement) on the 15-day Injured List and outfielder Dylan Carlson (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day Injured List. Carlson’s move is retroactive to May 22.

Joining the team’s 26-player active roster will be right-handed pitcher Junior Fernández, rookie left-handed pitcher Matthew Liberatore and outfielder Lars Nootbaar, who are all being recalled from Memphis (AAA).

The team also announced that right-handed pitcher Angel Rondón, who earned his first Major League win yesterday, was optioned to Memphis following yesterday’s game.

Liberatore, 22, made his Major League debut this past Saturday (May 22) in a start at Pittsburgh. 

The left-handed hitting Nootbaar, 24, appeared in seven games with the Cardinals to begin the season and in 11 games with Memphis following his option on April 24. He had a spectacular game yesterday at Gwinnett, collecting three home runs (including a grand slam) and seven RBI.

Fernández, 25, has appeared in 16 games for Memphis this season, going 1-2 with a 6.25 ERA (17.0 IP/12 ER).  He’s appeared in 34 games for the Cardinals over the past three seasons (2019-21).

Matz was removed from yesterday’s start after just four pitches. Carlson left Saturday’s game after two innings in the field.

Fernández wears uniform no. 44, Liberatore no. 52 and Nootbaar no. 21.
