Holmes’ Fifth Weekly Honor Is The Ninth This Season For A Flyer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forward DaRon Holmes II has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week after his efforts in road wins last week at Rhode Island and Saint Joseph’s.

Holmes averaged 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in the two Flyer wins last week.  He scored 18 at Saint Joseph’s (6-10 FG) with five rebounds, two assists and four blocked shots.  In the second half, he made all four of his shots, scoring 13 points and drawing five fouls.

The young Flyer big man is first nationally among freshmen (and 6th overall) in dunks (58).  Next are Memphis’ Jalen Memphis (46) and Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren (41).  Holmes leads the A-10 in FG% (.638, 127-199), and is fourth in blocked shots per game (2.4).

Holmes broke the Dayton single-season blocked shot record in just 21 games (it was 5 in 32 games done by Steve McElvene in 2015-16).  Holmes now has 66.

On the season, the Goodyear, Ariz. product leads the Flyers in scoring (11.6 ppg.) and is second in rebounding (5.8 rpg.).  In conference play, he leads UD in scoring (12.7) and rebounding (6.6).

This is the fifth time this year Holmes has been named Rookie of the Week, and the ninth time a Flyer has earned the award.  Point guard Malachi Smith earned the honor Nov. 30, Dec. 6, Dec. 20 and Feb. 14.  Holmes was also recognized on Dec. 13, Dec. 27, Jan. 17, and Feb. 7 (co-winner).

Dayton is 19-8 overall, and tied for second in the Atlantic 10 (one game out of first) with an 11-3 mark.  UD’s next game is at home against UMass Wednesday night.  Game time is 7 p.m. ET.
