Ohio State Football on a Record Streak of Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honors

OCTOBER 13, 2021

COLUMBUS, Ohio – If it seems as though the run that Ohio State is on of winning the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week honor – currently at six consecutive – is both impressive and unprecedented, it’s because it is.

Dating back to when the award was created in 2010, no school has won more than four in a row. That was achieved twice: First in 2014 by Ohio State when J.T. Barrett earned the honor on Nov. 10, Nov. 17 and Dec. 1 and Jalin Marshall on Nov. 24. And in 2017, Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor won it four weeks in a row: Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20 and Nov. 27. Neither one of those streaks were interrupted by an off week, making the Buckeyes’ active streak of six awards in six eligible weeks a conference record.

The Buckeyes’ current run includes four awards for QB C.J. Stroud (Sept. 6, Sept. 13, Oct. 4 and Oct. 11), one for RB TreVeyon Henderson (Sept. 20) and one for QB Kyle McCord (Sept. 27). The record for most Freshmen of the Week awards in a single-season is held by Taylor, who had eight in 2017. Barrett had seven as a redshirt freshman in 2014 and Illinois’ Nathan Scheelhaase earned six in 2010.
