Vienna, 30 September 2021 – Michael Raffl and the best ice hockey league in the world have a new home with immediate effect. Sky is acquiring extensive broadcasting rights to the National Hockey League (NHL) and will broadcast the North American ice hockey league live in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and South Tyrol in the 2021/22 to 2024/25 seasons inclusive. The new contract includes broadcasting rights across all distribution channels.

With the live broadcast of around 300 games per season, Sky will offer its customers more NHL matches in the next four seasons than have ever been shown on Austrian television before. This includes games from the Regular Season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including the NHL Winter Classic, the NHL All-Star Game and all games of the Stanley Cup Final. In addition, Sky will regularly show NHL Saturday and NHL Sunday (formerly European NHL Game of the Week), with games on the weekends taking place at European evening time in consideration of international hockey fans.

All NHL matches that Sky does not broadcast live will still be available to fans via nhl.tv. All games will be broadcast with the original English commentary. In addition, selected games, which include NHL Saturday and NHL Sunday games as well as the Stanley Cup Playoffs, will also be accompanied by German commentary.

Charly Classen, Executive Vice President Sport of Sky Deutschland: “With the experienced Michael Raffl and the highly talented Marco Rossi, there are also exciting Austrians playing in the NHL. Our customers can look forward to their performances and those of the world’s best international ice hockey stars over the next four years. The NHL is one of the most attractive sports competitions in the world and brings another great sport to our programming alongside football, motorsport, handball, tennis, golf and athletics.”

David Proper, NHL Senior Executive President of Media & International Strategy: “This partnership with Sky is an important part of our ongoing efforts to grow the game globally and deliver the game’s international stars to passionate fans in their home countries. Sky has a proven track record of providing top level sports programming and building brands in Austria. We could not be more excited to be working together.”

Full coverage from the NHL can be received with a Sky subscription as part of the Sport package, either on traditional linear TV or on the go with Sky Go. In addition, ice hockey fans can also be live with the Sky X streaming service.

Fans who have missed the live broadcasts or who want to watch more NHL ice hockey than just the individual games in full length will also have the opportunity to do so with Sky in future. In addition to the live broadcast rights, Sky has also secured extensive highlight rights, thanks to which NHL fans will always be kept fully informed on Sky. Among other things, official NHL highlight magazines will be shown in the Sky Sport programme and highlights of the games will be shown regularly for all Sky customers on Sky Sport News. Fans who are not yet Sky customers will also be able to experience the most spectacular goals, goalie saves and body checks from the NHL in the form of highlight clips on skysportaustria.at and on Sky Sport’s social media channels.

The kick-off of the NHL 2021/22 on Sky

The 2021/22 season will kick off with a doubleheader, beginning with the Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning hanging their third title banner under the arena roof at their home Amalie Arena. Following the ceremony, the defending champions will face the Pittsburgh Penguins (live from 1:30) before the 32nd NHL franchise, the Seattle Kraken, then play their first ever regular-season game at T-Mobile Arena in the Vegas Golden Knights (live from 4:00).

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any suggestions for inexperienced blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.
