WHITE SOX AT A GLANCE
l The Chicago White Sox have won four of their last six games
as they open a seven-game, eight-day homestand tonight against
the Yankees in the inaugural “Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville,
Iowa … the game is a FOX national broadcast.
l RHP Lance Lynn is scheduled to start for the White Sox, who
continue to lead the American League Central by a season-high
tying 10.5 games over Cleveland.
l The Sox are coming off a 4-2 trip to Chicago-NL (3-0) and
Minnesota (1-2), which ended yesterday with a 1-0 loss against
the Twins.
l Following tonight’s game and a day off tomorrow, the White
Sox resume this series at Guaranteed Rate Field (Saturday and
Sunday) before concluding the homestand with four games vs.
Oakland (8/16-19).
l The White Sox went 3-3 on their last homestand vs. Cleveland
(2-1) and Kansas City (1-2) from 7/30-8/5.

TONIGHT’S STORYLINES
l Hall-of-Famer Tony La Russa will miss tonight’s game to attend
the funeral of his sister’s husband … bench coach Miguel Cairo
will manage the club in La Russa’s absence.
l The White Sox, who are off to their best 115-game start since
2006 (69-46), begin a stretch where they play 14 straight games
vs. the Yankees (three) and Oakland (8/16-19) and at Tampa Bay
(8/20-22) and Toronto (8/23-26).
l The Sox lead the major leagues with 61 home runs since 6/30.
l Chicago is 34-11 vs. left-handed starters since 2020.
l White Sox starting pitchers lead the AL with a 3.37 ERA, including a 2.54 mark (11 ER/39.0 IP) over the last seven games.
l Lance Lynn leads the major leagues with a 2.04 ERA, the
lowest mark by a Sox pitcher through 20 starts since Wilbur Wood
(2.01) in 1971 (Elias).
l José Abreu needs one home run to tie Harold Baines (221)
for fourth place in White Sox history, and one to move past Tony
Oliva into fourth all-time among Cuban-born players.
l Danny Mendick will serve as the 27th man for tonight’s game.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP
l Jorge Polanco’s solo home run off José Ruiz in the sixth inning
accounted for the game’s only run as Minnesota won the deciding
game of the series, 1-0, over the White Sox at Target Field.
l Spot starter Reynaldo López held the Twins to one hit over
3.0 scoreless IP …Garrett Crochet (2.0 IP), Matt Foster (1.0) and
Craig Kimbrel (1.0) each made scoreless outings.
l José Abreu collected two of the six hits for the Sox, who were
shut out for the seventh time in 2021.
l The White Sox were held scoreless over the final 15 innings
of the series after scoring 12 runs over the first 12 innings.

VIEW FROM THE TOP
l The White Sox are in position to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history and capture
their first American League Central title since 2008.
l The Sox have been in first place for 99 days (every day since
5/7), their most in one season since 2012 (126) … they twice have
been a season-high 21 games over .500 (last 8/10) and currently
own a season-high tying, 10.5-game lead in the AL Central.
l Per STATS, this marks the fifth time in franchise history the Sox

LYNN DEALING
l Lance Lynn is attempting to join Early Wynn (1959), LaMarr
Hoyt (1993) and Jack McDowell (1993) as the only pitchers in
White Sox history to win the American League Cy Young Award.
l Lynn, who agreed to terms on a two-year, $38-million contract
extension (club option for 2024) on 7/17, leads the AL in ERA
(2.04), opponents average (.200), slugging (.310) and OPS (.573)
and ranks among the leaders in numerous other categories.
l He also is in position to become the first Sox pitcher since Joe
Horlen (2.06) in 1967 to lead the AL in ERA and first since Frank
Baumann (2.67) in 1960 to lead the majors in that category.

SALUTE TO THE STARTERS
l White Sox starting pitchers lead the American League in ERA
(3.37), strikeouts (709), SO/9.0 IP (10.16), average (.219), OBP
(.287), slugging (.368), OPS (.655) and WHIP (1.14) and are
second in wins (45).
l The rotation has allowed two runs or less in 72 games (20
scoreless) in 2021, the most in the AL (Houston is second, 67).

inspired by those worn by the clubs in the early twentieth century

l Thirty-five natives of Iowa have played for the White Sox during
the franchise’s 121-year history.
l RHP Red Faber (Cascade) is the lone Hall of Famer among
that group … Faber spent his entire 20-year career with the Sox

l White Sox pitchers lead the major leagues with 10.31 strikeouts
per 9.0 IP, which would be the second-highest mark in MLB history

1980 Yankees as the only American League teams since 1947
with four-plus pitchers ranking among the Top 10 in SO/9.0 IP:

7/6 with a torn left knee tendon, went 2-3 with a walk, RBI and
run scored last night in the first game of his rehab assignment
at Class AA Birmingham.
