Burch, Bates mentor elite men’s volleyball athletes

COLUMBUS, Ohio—While fans across the globe concentrated on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, a pair of Ohio State Men’s Volleyball coaches spent the summer coaching student athletes who could find themselves on a future Olympic or collegiate roster.

Kevin Burch, head coach of the Buckeyes, coached the U.S. Junior National Team, a roster of athletes that typically completes in the U21 World Championships. That event was not held with this being an Olympic year and because of concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burch’s team trained in Anaheim, California, July 28-Aug. 5. One of the players on the United States U21 roster was current Buckeye Jacob Pasteur, who just completed his freshman season in Columbus.

Pasteur is an outside hitter from Westminster, Maryland. He led Ohio State in kills (209) and service aces (21) while adding 42 blocks, good for the No. 2 spot among the Buckeyes.

Hudson Bates, Ohio State’s associate head coach, coached a group of 80 of the top men’s volleyball athletes nationally who were invited by USA Volleyball to participate in the National Team Development Program. The first-year program is designed for athletes in the U16-U17 age group.

Kyle Teune, a 6-7 outside hitter from Downers Grove, Illinois, will be joining the Buckeyes this season as a freshman. He also was in Anaheim this summer training with the Boys U19 National Team.
