IRVING, Texas — Six standout running backs from the American Athletic Conference have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2021 Doak Walker Award, which honors the nation’s top college running back.
The American’s representatives include SMU sophomore Ulysses Bentley IV, who led the league with 913 rushing yards in the shortened 2020 season, and East Carolina sophomore Rahjai Harris, who finished with 624 rushing yards in only eight games. Bentley and Harris were honored as The American’s Rookies of the Year last season.
Another sophomore, Cameron Carroll of Tulane, was named to the watch list after he finished with a league-leading 12 rushing touchdowns in 2020.
Tulsa had two players on the watch list as Shamari Brooks and Deneric Prince were both selected. Brooks, who missed the 2020 season due to injury, rushed for 1,046 yards in 2019, while Prince averaged 5.4 yards per carry and had 475 rushing yards in eight games last season.
Houston senior Mulbah Car was named to the watch list as well. Car rushed for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 2020.
The Doak Walker Award is presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum in honor of the former Mustang Heisman Trophy winner and three-time All-America selection.
