NHL News: Notes from the 2021 NHL Draft

NEW YORK (July 24, 2021) – A total of 223 players from 14 countries and 38 leagues worldwide were selected in the 2021 NHL Draft, held virtually Friday (Round 1) and Saturday (Rounds 2-7).

NHL CONNECTIONS ON DAY 2 OF THE DRAFT

Josh Doan (No. 37 overall, Arizona): His father, Shane, was a first-round pick by the original Jets in 1995 (No. 7 overall) and spent his entire 21-season career with Jets/Coyotes franchise (402-570-972 in 1,540 GP) where he served as captain from 2003-04 to 2016-17. His grandfather, Bernie, was a sixth-round pick by the Blues in 1971 (80th overall).

Scott Morrow (No. 40 overall, Carolina): His father, Steve, was a 10th-round pick by the Flyers in 1987 (209th overall) who played for the AHL’s Hershey Bears and CHL’s Fort Worth Fire. His uncle, Scott, was a fifth-round pick by the Hartford Whalers in 1988 (95th overall) and appeared in four games with the Flames in 1994-95.

Aatu Raty (No. 52 overall, NY Islanders): His brother, Aku, was a fifth-round pick by the Coyotes in the 2019 NHL Draft (151st overall) who skated for Karpat in the Finnish Elite League in 2020-21 (4-3—7 in 36 GP).

Samuel Helenius (No. 59 overall, Los Angeles): His father, Sami, was a fifth-round pick by the Flames in 1992 (102nd overall) who appeared in 155 career NHL regular-season games with the Flames, Lightning, Avalanche, Stars and Blackhawks from 1996-97 to 2002-03.

Colton Dach (No. 62 overall, Chicago): His brother, Kirby, was a first-round selection by the Blackhawks in 2019 (No. 3 overall) and recorded 2-8—10 in 18 games with Chicago in 2020-21.

Oliver Kapanen (No. 64 overall, Montreal): His uncle, Sami, was a fourth-round pick by the Whalers in 1995 who recorded 189-269—458 in 831 career NHL regular-season games with the Whalers, Hurricanes and Flyers. His cousin, Kasperi, was a first-round pick by the Penguins in 2014 and recorded 11-19—30 in 40 regular-season games with Pittsburgh in 2020-21.

Samu Salminen (No. 68 overall, New Jersey): His brother, Saku, was a seventh-round pick by the Lightning in the 2013 NHL Draft (184th overall) who played seven seasons of professional hockey in Finland, Germany, Sweden and France.

Simon Robertsson (No. 71 overall, St. Louis): His father, Bert, was a 10th-round pick by the Canucks in the 1993 NHL Draft (254th overall) who skated in 123 career NHL regular season games with the Canucks, Oilers and Rangers from 1997-98 to 2000-01.

Ryder Korczak (No. 75 overall, NY Rangers): His brother, Kaedan, was a second-round pick by the Golden Knights in 2019 (41st overall) and helped Team Canada earn a silver medal at the 2021 World Junior Championship.

Cole Huckins (No. 77 overall, Calgary): His uncle, Jim Malone, was a first-round pick by the Rangers in the 1980 NHL Draft (14th overall) and his uncle, Greg Malone, was a second-round pick by the Penguins in 1976 (19th overall) who appeared in 704 regular-season games with the Penguins, Whalers and Nordiques. His cousin, Ryan Malone, was a fourth-round pick by the Penguins in 1999 (115th overall) who skated in 647 regular-season games with the Penguins, Lightning and Rangers while his other cousin, Brad Malone, was a fourth-round pick by the Avalanche in 2007 (105th overall) who has appeared in 199 regular-season games with the Avalanche, Hurricanes and Oilers and in 2020-21 served as captain of the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.

Justin Ertel (No. 79 overall, Dallas): His father, Tyler, was an 11th-round pick by the Canucks in the 1990 NHL Draft (212th overall).

Guillaume Richard (No. 101 overall, Columbus): His uncle, Jean-Marc, appeared in five games with the Quebec Nordiques from 1987-88 to 1989-90 (2-1—3 in 5 GP) and had a lengthy professional career including stops in the AHL, IHL and Germany.

Jackson Blake (No. 109 overall, Carolina): His father, Jason, was an undrafted forward who played in 871 career regular-season games with the Kings, Islanders, Maple Leafs and Ducks and was the recipient of the 2007-08 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy after battling a leukemia diagnosis without missing a single game.

Redmond Savage (No. 114 overall, Detroit): His father, Brian, was an eighth-round pick by the Canadiens in 1991 (171st overall) who skated in 674 career regular-season games with the Canadiens, Coyotes, Blues and Flyers.

Jake Chiasson (No. 116 overall, Edmonton): His uncle, Doug Lidster, was a seventh-round pick by the Canucks in 1980 (133rd overall) who appeared in 897 career regular-season games with the Canucks, Rangers, Blues and Stars.

Ethan Cardwell (No. 121 overall, San Jose): His grandfather, Steve, was a fifth-round pick by the Penguins in 1970 (63rd overall) who appeared in 53 games for the Penguins from 1970-71 to 1972-73 (9-11—20 in 54 GP).

Rasmus Korhonen (No. 122 overall, Arizona): His father, Markus, is a former Blackhawks scout who tended goal for over a decade in professional leagues across Europe and is the current goaltending coach for Ilves in Finland’s top professional league.

Jack Bar (No. 138 overall, Dallas): His father, Mark, was a fourth-round pick by the Flyers in 1986 (83rd overall).

Manix Landry (No. 139, Arizona): His father, Eric, played in 68 career NHL games with the Flames and Canadiens from 1997-98 to 2001-02 (5-9—14 in 68 GP), followed by nine seasons in Europe with stops in Switzerland and Russia.

Justin Robidas (No. 147, Carolina): His father, Stephane, was a seventh-round pick by the Canadiens in 1995 (164th overall) and appeared in 937 career regular-season games with the Canadiens, Stars, Blackhawks, Ducks and Maple Leafs.

Oscar Plandowski (No. 155, Detroit): His father, Darryl, is the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Coyotes.

Francesco Arcuri (No. 175, Dallas): His cousin, Mike Cammalleri, was a second-round pick by the Kings in 2001 (49th overall) who recorded 294-348—642 in 906 career regular-season games with the Kings, Flames, Canadiens, Devils and Oilers.

Dru Krebs (No. 176, Washington): His brother, Peyton, was a first-round pick by the Golden Knights in the 2019 NHL Draft (17th overall) who led all WHL players in points with 13-30—43 in 24 GP in 2020-21. He also appeared in four NHL games for Vegas in the 2020-21 campaign.

Shane Lachance (No. 186, Edmonton): His father, Scott, was a first-round pick by the Islanders in 1991 (No. 4 overall) and skated in 819 regular-season games with the Islanders, Canadiens, Canucks and Blue Jackets. He also represented the Islanders at the 1997 NHL All-Star Game.

Ryan McCleary (No. 194, Pittsburgh): His father, Trent, appeared in 192 career regular-season games with the Senators, Bruins and Canadiens from 1995-96 to 1999-2000.

Justin Janicke (No. 195, Seattle): His brother, Trevor, was a fifth-round pick by the Ducks in 2019 (132nd overall) who skated for the University of Notre Dame in 2020-21.

Braden Hache (No. 210, Florida): His father, Conrad, is a former NHL referee and the current OHL Director of Officiating.

Andre Gasseau (No. 213, Boston): His father, James, was a sixth-round pick by the Sabres in 1984 (123rd overall) who played for the AHL’s Rochester Americans from 1986-87 to 1987-88.

Taylor Makar (No. 220, Colorado): His brother, Cale, won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 2019-20 and finished second in balloting for the Norris Trophy as the League’s top defenseman in 2020-21 with the Avalanche.

TRADES ON DAY 2 OF THE DRAFT

Arizona traded LW Brayden Burke and C Tyler Steenbergen to Los Angeles for D Cole Hults and LW Bokondji Imama.

Vegas traded New Jersey’s 2nd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired, 36th overall) to Detroit for Detroit’s 2nd-round pick in 2021 (38th overall) and Tampa Bay’s 4th-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 128th overall).

Ottawa traded its 2nd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (42nd overall) to Los Angeles for St. Louis’ 2nd-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 49th overall) and Los Angeles’ 5th-round pick in 2021 (136th overall).

Columbus traded RW Cam Atkinson to Philadelphia for RW Jakub Voracek.

Carolina traded its 2nd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (59th overall) to Los Angeles for Los Angeles’ 3rd-round pick in 2021 (72nd overall) and Calgary’s 4th-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 109th overall).

San Jose traded its 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (71st overall) to St. Louis for St. Louis’ 3rd-round pick in 2021 (81st overall) and 6th-round pick in 2021 (177th overall).

Carolina traded Los Angeles’ 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired, 72nd overall) to Nashville for Nashville’s 3rd-round pick in 2021 (83rd overall) and 5th-round pick in 2021 (147th overall).

Buffalo traded RW Sam Reinhart to Florida for G Devon Levi and Florida’s 1st-round pick in the 2022 or 2023 NHL Draft.

Washington traded Arizona’s 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired, 75th overall) to NY Rangers for NY Rangers’ 3rd-round pick in 2021 (80th overall) and 6th-round pick in 2021 (176th overall).

Montreal traded Chicago’s 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired, 76th overall) to Anaheim for Anaheim’s 3rd-round pick in 2022.

Calgary traded Edmonton’s 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired, 84th overall) to Los Angeles for Toronto’s 3rd-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 89th overall) and Los Angeles’ 6th-round pick in 2021 (168th overall).

Carolina traded its 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (91st overall) to Chicago for a 3rd-round pick in 2022.

Detroit traded its 4th-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (102nd overall) to Vegas for Winnipeg’s 4th-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 114th overall) and Carolina’s 5th-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 155th overall).

Carolina traded its 4th-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (123rd overall) to Ottawa for Los Angeles’ 5th-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired, 136th overall) and Ottawa’s 6th-round pick in 2021 (170th overall).

Montreal traded Vegas’ 4th-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired, 126th overall) to Tampa Bay for Tampa Bay’s 4th-round pick in 2022.

Montreal traded its 4th-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (127th overall) to Minnesota for Minnesota’s 5th-round pick in 2021 (150th overall) and 7th-round pick in 2021 (214th overall).

Montreal traded its 7th-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (223rd overall) to Arizona for St. Louis’ 7th-round pick in 2022 (previously acquired).
