Chicago Cubs July 29 roster moves

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder Sergio Alcántara and selected right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell from Triple-A Iowa. Infielder Nico Hoerner has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain and right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott has been optioned to Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster for Jewell, right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Alcántara, 24, is in his third stint with the Cubs this season and has hit .171 (14-for-82) with 12 runs, three doubles, three triples, two home runs and five RBI in 39 games. First selected from Iowa, May 30, he was optioned back to Iowa, July 4, then was again on the major league roster, July 6-22. In 25 games with Iowa this season, Alcántara has hit .305 (25-for-82) with three doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and a .447 on-base percentage, drawing 21 walks to contribute to an .898 OPS.

Alcántara made his major league debut with the Tigers last season, appearing in 10 games and batting .143 (3-for-21) with a triple, home run and RBI while seeing time at both second base (six games) and third base (six games). He was claimed off waivers by Chicago, February 5 of this year prior to being outrighted, February 20.

Jewell, 28, is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA (10 ER/32.1 IP) and four saves in 23 relief appearances for Iowa this season, walking 13 and striking out 35 for an average of 9.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. He has allowed just three home runs in 129 batters faced and has recorded a 1.05 WHIP.

Jewell, who signed a minor league deal with Chicago in November 2020, is 0-1 with a 6.99 ERA (22 ER/28.1 IP) in 21 major league relief appearances with the Los Angeles Angels spanning the 2018-19 seasons. He was originally selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Jewell is 25-43 with 19 saves, one complete game, one shutout and a 4.80 ERA (288 ER/539.2 IP) in 181 minor league games, 77 as a starter. He has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen since 2018.

Hoerner, 24, has hit .313 (42-for-134) with 10 doubles, 14 RBI and a .388 on-base percentage in 39 games for Chicago this season.

Abbott, 25, has no record and an 8.03 ERA (11 ER/12.1 IP) in six relief appearances for Chicago this season. In 10 starts for Iowa this season, Abbott is 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA (39 ER/48.2 IP).

Stewart, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list, July 6, with right elbow inflammation. He is 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA (8 ER/13.2 IP) in four games, three starts, for the Cubs this season.
