MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin Athletics will celebrate ‘Barry Alvarez Day’ presented by BMO Harris on Saturday, Oct. 2 when the Badgers host Michigan at Camp Randall Stadium. UW will honor Alvarez, who officially retires today after more than 30 years in Madison, 16 as head football coach and the last 18 as Director of Athletics.

“Coach Alvarez has done so much for the athletic department, the university, the state and countless student-athletes that it’s only right for us to honor him with his own day,” Deputy AD Chris McIntosh, who will take over as Director of Athletics tomorrow, said. “It’s a great opportunity for our fans to say thank you and for us as a department to show our appreciation.”

Alvarez is a member of the College Football, Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, UW Athletics and State of Wisconsin Athletic Halls of Fame. He is the winningest football coach in school history, leading the Badgers to three Big Ten championships and three Rose Bowl titles. He took over the role of Director of Athletics in 2004 and during his tenure as AD saw UW win 16 team national titles and 74 conference championships. Alvarez was named Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year in 2018.

More details about plans for ‘Barry Alvarez Day’ presented by BMO Harris will be released at a later date.
