Washington Nationals select Justin Miller’s contract from Rochester

The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Justin Miller and designated right-handed pitcher Rogelio Armenteros for assignment on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals placed right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to June 12) with groin inflammation. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

Miller, 34, joins the Nationals after going 1-0 with five saves, a 0.55 ERA (1 ER/16.1 IP) and 29 strikeouts in 13 outings with Triple-A Rochester. He’s allowed nine hits (.161 opp. AVG) and issued four walks along the way. He allowed the lone earned run in his second outing of the season and since that point, has tossed 13.1 scoreless innings across 11 appearances.

Miller spent parts of two seasons (2018-19) in Washington’s bullpen. He went 8-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 68 appearances (68.0 IP). All told, he’s appeared in 150 Major League games, posting a 4.43 ERA across five seasons with Detroit (2014), Colorado (2015-16) and Washington (2018-19).

Armenteros, 26, went 0-4 with a 5.83 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Rochester.

Scherzer, 36, is 5-4 with a 2.21 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 13 starts for Washington this season.
