2021 Home Opener for Indians on Monday; Kansas City 3 Cleveland 0

BLANKED BY KC
» After Cleveland blanked Kansas City, 2-0, last season on
Opening Day at Progressive Field, the Royals returned the favor
in the Tribe’s home opener on Monday with a 3-0 shutout…marked
the first defeat in a home opener for Cleveland since 2017,
snapping a four-year win streak…also the club’s first ever loss
when hosting Kansas City for a home opener (entered with a 4-0
record in such contests).
» LHP LOGAN ALLEN made his first career start for Cleveland,
also his fourth career start overall; became first left-hander to make
a start for Cleveland since Ryan Merritt on Aug. 30, 2017 at New
York-AL and first southpaw starting pitcher to make a Cleveland
Opening Day roster since T.J. House in 2015…Allen continued
the rotation’s early trend of effective starts through 4 team games
(3.75 ERA), surrendering only a Whit Merrifield 2-run HR in the
2nd inning (5.0IP, 5H, 2R-ER, 2BB, 3SO, HR); already his third HR
and 8th/9th RBI thru 4 team games…RHP TRISTON McKENZIE
worked his third career relief appearance, falling one out shy of 4.0
complete frames (2H, 1R-ER, 4BB, 5SO).
» Cleveland’s offense managed just 3 hits on the afternoon, as
LHP Danny Duffy tossed 6.0 SHO frames for the victory…lone
extra-base hit came on a 4th-inning 2B by DH FRANMIL REYES…
Cleveland put two aboard to start the 9th, bringing the tying run to
the plate, before former Tribe first baseman Carlos Santana made
a diving stop to rob OF EDDIE ROSARIO of extra-bases and start
a rally-killing double play.
