BOSTON, Mass. – Oral Roberts forward Kevin Obanor was named to the 2020-21 Lou Henson Award mid-season watch list and is the only representative from The Summit League as announced Tuesday.
The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in NCAA Division I college basketball, honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Obanor is one of just four players in the NCAA this season to rank inside the top 25 in scoring and rebounding and he currently ranks eighth in the nation recording seven double-doubles averaging 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The redshirt junior also is 17th in the country pulling down 142 total rebounds, while his 68 made free throws ranks 24th.
Earlier this season, the Houston, Texas, native joined elite company at ORU as the 18th player in program history to record 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds as he reached the milestones in back-to-back nights at the Mabee Center.
The award is named after Lou Henson who is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
The recipient of 2020-21 award will be announced in April.
