BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox today signed right-handed pitcher Matt Andriese to a one-year contract for the 2021 season, with a club option for the 2022 season. In addition, catcher Deivy Grullón today was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Andriese, 31, made 16 appearances (one start) for the Los Angeles Angels in 2020, posting a 4.50 ERA (16 ER/32.0 IP), a 1.00 WHIP, and a .184 opponent batting average (21-for-114). In eight September outings, all in relief, the right-hander allowed just two runs in 12.1 innings pitched (1.46 ERA) while limiting opponents to a .075 batting average (3-for-40) with zero walks and 13 strikeouts. Andriese threw at least 2.0 innings in eight of his appearances, including 5.2 scoreless frames on July 26 at Oakland. On the season, he held right-handed hitters to a .501 OPS.

Selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2011 June Draft from the University of California, Riverside, Andriese is 26-34 with a 4.57 ERA (234 ER/460.2 IP) in 183 career appearances (50 starts) over six seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2015-18), Arizona Diamondbacks (2018-19), and Angels (2020). Primarily a starter through his first three major league seasons, 105 of Andriese’s 111 appearances from 2018-20 were in relief. His 166.1 relief innings over the last three seasons are the ninth-most in the majors. In 2019 with Arizona, he posted career highs in appearances (54) and strikeouts per 9.0 innings (10.06) while ranking fourth among National League relievers with 17 outings of at least 2.0 innings.

Grullón, 24, was claimed off waivers by Boston from the Philadelphia Phillies on September 3 and spent the majority of his time with the Red Sox at the Alternate Training Site. The right-handed hitter was appointed Boston’s 29th man for the club’s doubleheader on September 8, starting Game 2 at catcher. He has caught 86 games at the Triple-A Level, and has thrown out 183 of 628 (29.1%) attempted base stealers during his minor league career. Grullón hit a career-high 21 home runs in both 2018 and 2019, combining to hit .278 (204-for-733) with an .840 OPS, 38 doubles, and 136 RBI over 198 minor league games during those seasons. Signed by Philadelphia as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2012, he has played in five major league games between the Phillies (2019) and Red Sox (2020).
