Following the regular season, Matt Turner finished second in voting for
Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, finishing behind Philadelphia’s Andre
Blake for the league honor. Turner posted a prolific campaign between the
sticks for the Revolution, anchoring New England to a new club record for
best goals-against average (1.09) in a single season. He was also voted
Revolution Team MVP (by fans) and Players’ Player of the Year (by teammates) for his efforts in 2020.
While Blake took home Goalkeeper of the Year honors, Turner bested him
in the Revs’ Round One win, making four saves in New England’s first
postseason shutout since Oct. 20, 2008 vs. Chicago Fire and first away
postseason shutout since Oct. 27, 2007 against New York Red Bull.
He followed that up with another outstanding effort in the Eastern Conference Semifinal against Orlando City SC, a two-save outing highlighted
by a critical penalty kick save on Nani in the 74th minute that thwarted a
second-half surge from the Lions. Turner’s PK stop was the club’s first
in postseason play since Matt Reis turned away two penalty kicks in the
2004 Eastern Conference Semifinal against Columbus.

Turner met or surpassed several personal bests this year despite the
shortened regular season. He set a new career high with six shutouts –
two shy of the league lead. He conceded only 24 goals through 22 starts,
finishing the season ranked among the top five league wide in saves percentage and saves.
According to American Soccer Analysis, Turner’s -7.27 goals allowed minutes expected goals (xGA-GA) was the best mark among MLS goalkeepers
in 2020 by a margin of 1.96.
